Teachers in Alberta!
Please note that Alberta Education released a new "Safety Guidelines for Physical Activity in Alberta Schools' in September 2008. Please refer to the Guidelines for details, as they are extensive and the certification varies depending on the environment and the activity. For example, the new guidelines include:
- New canoe and kayak certification is required by Alberta Education for teachers or any others who instruct and/or lead students of Alberta schools.
- There are requirements for 'appropriate helmets' for canoeing and kayaking on moving water.
- Swift Water Rescue certification is also required in moving water environments.
Teachers must first determine the type of activity you will be doing and the type of environment you will be doing it in, in order to know the certification required by yourself or the Instructor you hire. Categories of environments include: designated flatwater waterfront, flatwater lake, on moving water class I or on moving water class II. (Paddling on river higher than Class II is not allowed.) Categories of activities include: day canoeing, kayaking, voyageur canoeing or tripping from base camp, tripping on lake, tripping on river, with voyageur canoes.
Refer to pages 78-87 in the Guidelines, section: Outdoor Education - Canoeing and Kayaking.
